For me guarding my heart is definitely guarding everything about myself. Guarding my own emotions, taking control of them, and asking my critical friends to slap me with their harsh but truthful words. And as a literature lover, at times it simply means finding my way out in the sphere of poetry and living my real world.
It's really necessary to check someone's intentions and motives. I remember I read a book it says there that we can love unconditionally but trust is earned no matter how good may we perceived them to be. It's like you're building a home and someone wants to be part of your home, would you welcome that person easily? Keep in mind, you hold the keys.
Let's look within ourselves too before jumping out into different conclusions or assumptions. Go back into reality and rationalize.
I also learned that it's not building walls like what I kept doing before. You need to build good relationships with other people because you will learn from their stories as well. It doesn't always mean a romantic relationship, it's also building connections toward your faith walk or self-improvement. And my good friend told me before that guarding our hearts also involved other people because we can't do it on our own, we need accountability so we can weigh the situations better and they could remind us of our limitations. Thus, I am grateful to those friends of mine who sound critical at times but are truthful and honest.
And if it's His will, it will happen but you have a responsibility to guard your heart.
